A Guide to Local Architectural Styles

Architectural style is defined as the characteristics or features of a building or house that make it distinct and historically identifiable. Architectural style includes the exterior influences such as the quality of materials used and the construction method as the form of the building. Architectural styles are developed from time to time and are replaced by new styles due to fashion, preferences, and available material changes. From the start of the world to today, there have been many changes in how a house is built and designed. Here are some of the most common local architectural styles.

Neolithic architecture

Neolithic architecture existed from 10,000 to 2000 BC and included both homes and religious buildings, tombs, symbolic buildings, and monuments, including those found in Europe and the Mediterranean. Most of the buildings from this time have elaborate structures and are made from skins, textile, stone and timber.

Mesopotamia 

The architectural style called Mesopotamia existed from 4500 to 2000 BC in the region of Tigris and Euphrates. It includes complex urban planning and unique building styles such as the courtyard house, ziggurats and the stepped pyramids made as part of the temples.

Ancient Egyptian

As most people know, ancient Egyptians were not a stable civilization and went through major changes. This was also reflected in their architectural style as they have varying architectural styles. The ancient Egyptians developed architectural monuments, the most famous ones being The great sphinx of Giza and the great pyramid. These pyramids were mainly constructed using hardened mud bricks, limestones and sand. This was due to the scarcity of wood present in Egypt due to its location.

Ancient Greek architecture is most famously known for its temples and civic and religious ideas. They had developed several buildings, areas for open theatres, public squares and public monuments. Their facilities led to an evolution in architectural style through three defined orders, ionic, doric and Corinthian. Their architectural style had decorative and structural characteristics, a mixture not present in previous architectural styles.

Roman

The architectural style of the roman empire, which existed from 300 BC to 700 AD, was largely influenced by the architectural style of the ancient Greek. They adopted a similar emphasis on civic buildings; however, they had several distinctive characteristics, which led to it becoming a completely new architectural style. Romans are known worldwide for their iconic structures their buildings, including temples, baths, villas, palaces and even circuses. Their architecture also developed important structural features such as arches, domes and vaulted ceilings. All of these were made from concrete and were very well engineered and strong. This gave rise to engineering projects such as the development of roads, bridges and aqueducts.

The Byzantine

The byzantine empire existed from 330 AD to 1430 AD. The architectural style of the Byzantine empire was a continuation of that of the Romans, but it was also influenced by architecture in the East. The geometric complexity of the buildings was increased, there was more freedom when it came to the use of classical orders, and the churches often had dome structures supported by pillars adopted by the Greek cross plan.

Moorish 

 The Moorish architectural style is regarded as the Islamic architecture of  North Africa and Spain, and Portugal. The distinctive features of Moorish architecture include muqarnas, voussoirs, horseshoe arches, crenellated arches, lacent arches, ogee arches, courtyards, and decorative tile work and domes.

Romanesque

 The architectural style of medieval Europe is known as Romanesque, and the main feature was the semi-circular arches. It was developed in a gothic-inspired manner with pointed arches. Romanesque style of architecture has been adopted worldwide and can be seen in different areas as well.

Renaissance

Renaissance was an architectural style that emerged in Europe and resulted from the revival of the interest in classical antiques and more scientific understanding. It consisted of clean lines, symmetry and proportion along with dorms.
