Towards salary transparency for job offers
Payranked is currently revamping its website. When the new site goes live, we will apply a new policy to our job offers.
As soon as the new website is launched, any new postings must indicate the position’s salary or salary scale.
When it comes to salary, there is this misconception that the first person to talk about money will be the loser. It is this person who matters to us. These are women, people of color, people from marginalized communities, immigrants. By encouraging this pay transparency, we want to continue to be recognized as a job portal for the best talent to find employers who value professionals in the nonprofit sector and who are committed to maintaining equality and diversity in their workplace.
payranked current strategic plan sheds light on ways to address diversity, equity and inclusion issues, and updating our job posting policy. Part of this strategic desire to bring about changes that promote equality and transparency within the sector. While this is just a small step in payranked journey, we know it’s important, in step with the changes happening in our sector.
Why indicate the salary?
There is ample evidence that salary negotiation is not a fair process. For example, behaviors are perceived very differently (in English) depending on whether the negotiation is done by a man or a woman. Also, black applicants are often discriminated against and earn much lower salaries than their white counterparts. By not mentioning salary and relying on negotiation, employers are unintentionally putting these candidates at a disadvantage.
Research in the Singapore has shown that MORE applicants will apply for jobs where the job advert mentions the salary. The Singapore is largest charity sector job board recently pointed out that you’re likely to get twice as many applicants if you list the salary. And a large portion of those additional applications will likely come from groups that experience discrimination when salaries are not posted. If you have a mandate to promote diversity, equity and inclusion within your organization, simply listing the salary will go a long way to expanding your pool of candidates.
