What Is NDIS, And How Does It Provide Disability Support?

What Is the NDIS?

NDIS stands for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, and it is a program started by the Australian government. It is designed to empower people with any permanent or significant impairment and helps them work towards their goals. It also aims to make independent living possible for its participants. This program was legislated in 2013 and went into operation in 2020. Over the years, NDIS has helped many participants meet their goals and become more independent, and it continues to do so.

Personalised Support Services provide disability support in Melbourne. They have qualified staff who provide compassionate care to the participants and help them manage their NDIS plan to meet their goals.

How Can I Access The Support?

If you are thinking of becoming an NDIS participant, the first thing you need to do is determine whether or not you are eligible for the program. You can check the eligibility criteria on NDIS’ website.

Once you have determined your eligibility, you can register yourself and have a meeting with the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). You will need to prepare your goals and the support you are going to request in the meeting.

Suppose NDIA deems your requested support reasonable and necessary for your mentioned goals. In that case, they will allow the funding for those supports, and you can access them with the help of a professional service provider.

What Is An NDIS Plan?

After you meet with the NDIA, you are given a plan that contains all the information regarding your NDIS support, funds, and goals. It states what support you will need and will be able to access.

This plan is made for 12 months, and the goals are set by keeping the duration in mind. You will have a plan review meeting after 12 months in which NDIA reviews your progress. If you want to make any changes in your plan or goals, you can do it in that meeting, and you can also request new support, which NDIS will approve if they are considered reasonable and necessary for you.

How Does NDIS Help With Disabilities?

NDIS is a support program available for everyone. It is designed to provide lifetime support to people who have any significant impairment; it provides them the funds to cover the cost of the support they receive through NDIS so they can get access to all the support that is needed. NDIS is different from other social schemes because it doesn’t specify who can access the support.

Anyone who needs it can access all the support provided under NDIS regardless of their income and assets. The government pays for the majority of the cost of NDIS, and the participants only have to pay a small monthly premium. This program not only gives them independence but also lets them have equal opportunities and develop new skills that will help them in their lives.

What Services Does NDIS Provide?

NDIS provides its participants with a wide range of support, from personal care to assisting them in the workplace. The supports under this program are divided into 15 categories that are all funded under three different types of budgets.

These services include assistance with daily living, household chores (cooking, cleaning), personal care (bathing, dressing), assistive technology, transportation, assistance in community activities, consumables, home modifications, finding & keeping a job, etc.

The three budgets under NDIS include Core Support, Capacity-Building Support, and Capital Support. Each of these budgets contains funds for different support and services, and among the three of them, only Core Support allows the participants to use their funding in another category.

Unlike Core Support, Capacity-Building and Capital Support are not flexible. You can learn more about these support budgets and the support they fund on the NDIS website.
