NPI Coin: Using Blockchain to Verify Healthcare Provider Data
The healthcare industry relies on elaborate and costly processes to keep healthcare data timely and accurate. This is especially true in the realm of vendor verification. Patients need health insurance companies to match their medical needs with an approved provider to ensure payment of claims.
Unfortunately, vendor verification is often complex, expensive, and error-prone. However, innovations in cryptography and blockchain networks are paving the way for more accurate and less expensive vendor verification. How does it work? By implementing a blockchain network that uses a token called NPI Coin to reward network participants.
Why is it called NPI Coin? NPI stands for National Provider Identifier. Like a Social Security number for healthcare, an NPI is a unique identifier for medical providers, insurers, and medical clearinghouses. Each physician also has an NPI, making it a useful standard for verifying provider data across the healthcare ecosystem.
In blockchain networks, tokens reward people for activities that encourage useful results. The most well-known example is Bitcoin, which awards coins to blockchain participants called miners who deploy computing resources to accomplish network goals.
We propose an NPI Coin that applies this principle to vendor verification. NPI Coin would be a medium of exchange that gives network users a strong incentive to participate. With network effects, a greater number of participants joining the NPI Coin ecosystem would drive more value over time.
This proposal explores the potential of an NPI Coin ecosystem in four parts:
- Why we need it: The weaknesses that affect our current supplier verification system.
- How NPI Coin helps: The potential of a token-based blockchain network to address these pain points.
- The obstacles to implementation: The human and technical obstacles that we must overcome to launch NPI Coin.
- How automation helps: The processes and algorithms that simplify the complexities inherent in blockchain networks.
