KEA PARROT BEHAVIOUR

It is believed that the Kea Parrot is a very adventurous, curious, and courageous bird. They tend to get into the interior of buildings, and even take on motor vehicles for their windshield wiper blades and rubbers. They are fond of playing in the snow and bathing in the puddles of frozen ice that have thawed and will fly in powerful winds.

If they’re not trying to draw people’s attention Kea parrots are typically seen in groups of about 10 people. Cool Birds  In the time of breeding, when adult birds are mating, young birds can form large groups that can include up to 100 birds. Keas are semi-nocturnal, and are inactive at night, particularly in summer. 

Keas are quite robust birds, and once they’ve acclimatized, they can be tolerant of a range of temperatures. There is a tendency to see the seasonal movement to higher altitudes in the wild, but some birds live permanently above the snowline within Alpine regions. Kea parrots are loud and lively birds that are able to move about by hopping sideways, allowing them to advance.

KEA PARROT REPRODUCTION

Female Kea Parrots are sexually mature at the age of 3 years old, while males are about 4 to 5 years old. aged. Male Keas could be able to mate with as many as four females during the breeding period. Female Keas usually lay three to 4-eggs between the months of July and January. The eggs are laid in nests that are built in places with a lot of sand. Nests are lined with moss. 

The eggs are laid within 29 days. The hen is allowed to leave the nest to feed or be fed twice daily for approximately 1 hour at dawn and at nightfall. The birds will be leaving no further than one mile away from the nest. When the babies are about one month of age, males will assist with their food. The babies stay within the nest for 10 to 13 weeks after when they begin to fledge.

KEA PARROT CONSERVATION STATUS

Kea Parrots are classified as ‘vulnerable’ according to the IUCN because their numbers are decreasing. The decline of the species isn’t caused by farmers who kill them in the belief that keas will kill their sheep. What Do Baby Birds Eat

 This hasn’t been proved in a definitive way one way or another but, given the abundance of Keas’s regular food, it’s difficult to comprehend why they are carnivores. In the 1940s, a reward was paid to the dead Keas and the records indicate that as many as 619 birds were killed.
